Wide open is the door is an installation comprised of two paintings, two sound sculptures, and a project for an intervention in the façade of the building of the Trindade Theatre in Lisbon.
The aim of this project was to work with the unique characteristics of this building, combining a set of elements that establishes an inversion between the interior and the exterior of this space, evoking a relationship of space and surface that is common ground between painting and architecture.
The project for the façade of this theatre presupposed painting two of its sections white, establishing a dialogue with the two paintings that replicate, in the interior space, the main colour of the façade. However, this intervention was not allowed by the theatre’s director. The idea was thus materialized in a series of sketches or drawings.
This idea of inversion is also presented in the sound sculptures that have an architectonic scale and were situated in each of the doors, facing toward the street. These two pieces look like two white columns, each one of them containing ventilators that propagate the pre-recorded ambient sound of the street, like two speakers.
